🚨 I have been warning Government about this for years.

Now @thetimes Business section:

🇬🇧 UK fruit & vegetable production down 16% in a decade

🥦 Imports now provide 78%

🇺🇸 US grain harvest forecast down 25 million tonnes

🌾 Barley, oats & rapeseed production there heading for its lowest level since detailed records began in 1984

🔥 Meanwhile the countries Britain increasingly relies upon for food are themselves suffering drought, heat and wildfires.

This is the fatal flaw in outsourcing food security.

The economic model made complacenent assumption that if Britain stopped producing something, the world market would always sell it to us.

Climate change, war and increasingly fragile supply chains are demonstrating why that assumption was entirely reckless.

You cannot import your way out of a global food shortage. We still have no food production plan and we still have Brexit trade barriers which make it harder and more expensive to feed Britain.

🚨 It’s remarkable that Britain now recognises steel as a strategic national asset but still treats food as though the global market will always provide.

This is becoming a consistent theme across government:

Steel is strategic.
Energy is strategic.
Defence is strategic.
Semiconductors are strategic.

The missing piece is food.

Food security is national security.
