MISO Survey

The MISO Survey is a web-based quantitative survey designed to measure how faculty, students, and staff view library and computing services in higher education.

MISO measures the satisfaction of key IT and library services on a 4-point scale. Undergraduates find all of these services to be at least somewhat satisfactory. 62% have high satisfaction scores (greater than 3.50). Total undergrad respondents: 12052.

Many colleges and universities seek to reduce printing overall, both for financial and sustainability reasons. But students continue to consider campus printers to be of high importance (with a mean of 3.46 on our 4-point importance scale; 5000 respondents).

Dave conceived of MISO when confronted in the early 2000s with the need to measure the combined effectiveness of Bryn Mawr’s IT and library services.

The MISO Survey allows you to customize the name of many general systems, like learning management systems, to ensure that your community knows what you are asking, while allowing for comparison nationally to other participating institutions.

There are 474 items in the 2023 MISO Survey for faculty (our longest survey). All but nine items are optional, allowing institutions to ask only the questions that matter most to them each time they participate.

Connecticut College has been a MISO participant roughly every other year since 2007. Starting in 2014, they began a pattern of publishing a report that offers a summary of key findings for their campus community.

Each school that participates in the MISO Survey needs to get IRB approval since the survey collects personally identifiable information. Without approval, a school can’t share its results.

In order to administer the MISO Survey on your campus you must obtain approval from your Institutional Review Board (IRB), a campus committee that oversees the use of human and animal subjects in research.

New MISO Team member Wesley Ng-A-Fook is the PMO Director at Barry University in Florida. He and his team have managed an ERP implementation and many capital projects on campus. Wesley has administered the MISO Survey at Barry since its first participation in 2013.

The MISO Team offers a series of free online workshops for CSAs throughout the late summer and fall. The workshops will be strategically scheduled to best support CSAs in the preparations they will do in the weeks that follow.
