Ireland 🇮🇪 scheduled to play 🇮🇱 in 2 days time:
‘I know the difference between right or wrong’
‘6 points or 75,000 lives’
‘I have a heart’
‘Ireland 🇮🇪 must stand up for what’s right’
‘Do not sportswash genocide’
For humanity
Stop the game ⚽️
🇮🇪 💚 🇵🇸
I think Ireland will play tomorrow. And that, perhaps, is the clearest expression of the crisis.
Look at how much has to be ignored for this game to go ahead: a player refusing to take part, others openly questioning it, a dressing room in turmoil, a delayed press conference, supporters absent, and a match Israel cannot even host on its own soil.
Yet eleven Irish players are still expected to walk onto the pitch, wait for the whistle, watch the ball roll, and allow all of this to be called football as usual.
The players are not the problem. They have been left carrying a moral burden that institutions with far greater power refused to carry themselves. UEFA has its regulations. The FAI has its institutional obligations and fears the consequences of refusing to play. International politics hangs over the entire question. And somehow, at the end of that chain, the decision arrives at the feet of a footballer.
So the question tomorrow is not simply whether Ireland will play. I think they will.
The real question is: how much must become abnormal before refusing to play becomes legitimate?
If a match needs a third country, absent supporters, emergency meetings and players wrestling with their consciences simply to reach kick-off, this is not normality.
It is normality being manufactured by force.
The institutions may get their whistle, their ninety minutes, their scoreline and their points.
But making the game happen does not make it normal.
And sometimes the most powerful thing football can say is not to play at all.
There are no negotiations and @GillianKeegan refuses to release the pay review body report going as far as to refuse an FOI because it’s apparently not in the public interest.
