Happy middle Sunday of half term, aka the best day ever. I've improved it even more by doing all my planning for the first week back so I can genuinely SWITCH OFF until next Monday π₯³
One week in and I genuinely couldn't tell you how I've spent it, other than tonight filling my cup catching up with a friend from my pre-teaching career over a lovely meal β€οΈ
Nearly a week into half term and for the first time ever I've had a week with genuinely next to no plans. You know what? I didn't realise how much I needed this.
this is also whilst all of us are teaching - the week we go back to school, I already have at least one meeting scheduled with a family per day. I LOVE my job and my role, but we need change, to feel supported and to have the tools we need to support the families we serve.
Totally agree that the SEND system in our schools is not fit for purpose and an overhaul is needed. However, I hope that families see most schools are doing all they can in a broken system and with the resources they have. "If the school refuse..." "the school won't..."
schools are full of advocates for your children, I spend my days working in the pockets of my SENCo and working with heads of departments and SLT to make adjustments for our neurodivergent young people in particular. Maybe it's that the school "can't" rather than "won't"?
Just to highlight this is the best decision I've made in my (very short!) teaching career so far - completely flipped the class on its head, lowest attainers = highest results in the end of chapter assessment! 100% engagement from all students in a very tricky class π₯³
Can't decide if it's mad if ingenious to start year 11 on constructions and loci π surely if they have any enthusiasm for it it'll be right at the beginning of the year!?
On autism/ADHD & behaviour.
Over the weekend, I have read lots blaming autistic children for their behaviour, or suggesting poor parenting is to blame.
Autism & ADHD are *disabilities* that can impact on behaviour - to fail to understand this is simple disability discrimination.
What a first week! Both back in the classroom teaching Maths and the pastoral stuff was back with a bang - a Sunday well spent sorting for the week ahead to get me back into the rhythm of this crazy career π
yesterday I ended being a pessimist - today I'm wide awake at 4:15am BUT I've decided, positivity is the way forward! 1 day to sort myself out be ready to welcome back our kids! π
relieved to say I've been in post since Jan though - was madness, but in hindsight I'm pleased to start the new year already making progress with them!
