@misshunter76 Lady Danbury would agree, patience is a most noble virtue, gentle reader. And yours has rightfully earned a desirable reward.
Do enjoy a most scandalous reading of "The Viscount Who Loved Me" from the Bridgerton cast. Be warned, it may become quite steamy.
Dr. Gladys West, the Black mathematician whose brilliance made GPS possible, has passed at 95. Born on a Dinwiddie County farm during the Great Depression, she overcame segregation to become a scientist and map the world—literally. May we never forget her legacy or the path she paved for generations of mathematicians.
Titanic (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) won a record-tying 11 Oscars. It should’ve won more. Titanic is 3 hours and 15 minutes. It should’ve been longer. After all these years & all those accolades, James Cameron’s seminal work still never fails to leave me stunned. I felt compelled to revisit this film- a film I haven’t rewatched in years- after watching Cameron’s latest Avatar in IMAX. And I have to admit: I was not emotionally prepared for how devastating of a rewatch this would turn out to be because the final hour of this film is simply crushing. This movie is as close to perfection as you can get.
Titanic released in theaters over 28 years ago but, similar to the Lord of Rings trilogy, it still somehow looks better than almost every film that’s been released since. From the opening shots of the wrecked, ravaged Titanic underwater with my boy Bill Paxton (RIP) leading the way, to the shots of Jack & Rose holding each other at the front of the ship, to the blue-coded shots that melt the final hour of this movie: everything about the filmmaking here is spectacular. And it’s all James Cameron. I mentioned the blue-coded shots, a color used so heavily in T:2 Judgment Day, it’s such an appropriate color to use for the conclusion of such an epic film because it speaks to serenity of the ocean but also its vast isolation. Even Cameron’s use of the score & Celine Dion’s voice is absolutely perfect.
Above all, it’s Cameron’s ability to leverage practical effects that really stands out. Cameron’s insistence on actually getting shots of the wrecked Titanic for the film’s first and final act along with rebuilding so much of Titanic for the core of the story brings the audience face-to-face with the stakes of the story. We just don’t see practical effects like this - and what I mean by that, for example, is when everything is unfolding in the final hour of this film, the use of a real ship, real water, and real chaos makes everything feel like its actually happening before your eyes. CGI & AI be damned- it’s the practical effects that carry the day here. Even the ballroom deserves its own shoutout.
But what Cameron unlocks with Titanic isn’t just beautiful filmmaking, it’s layered character development from the top of the ship to the bottom. By the time Titanic hits its iceberg and everything begins to fall apart, we as an audience are emotionally invested in countless characters- most of whom have no connection to one another. Cameron constantly jokes that he made Titanic because he wanted a reason to explore the deep sea with studio money- so he tossed in a story akin to Romeo & Juliet in the ocean. But Cameron’s selling himself short. He didn’t just give us a love-story amid a massive disaster, he developed countless characters within that framework. We care about Thomas Andrews, the builder of the ship, we need to know what happens to Jack’s friends fighting for life at the bottom of the boat, hell, we’re even interested in where Caledon (Billy Zane) ends up. In other words, Cameron is builds an unbelievable story with countless characters we care about within some of the best filmmaking I’ve ever seen.
Lastly, it still always shocks me how incredible Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet are in this together & at such a young age. Their chemistry- and their individual performances- are like gasoline on a fire that Cameron already started. I don’t know if Cameron himself even realized the magnitude of their performances- did he even realize until he got to the editing room that he didn’t just pick two actors who fit this film well- he picked the two best possible actors on Earth at the time to star in this movie? And the fact Leo didn’t receive an Oscar nomination??? I just collapsed. I also need to mention that I will always believe deep in my gut that DiCaprio’s soulmate is Winslet. She challenges him intellectually on a level I haven’t seen many other actors do & they share the screen so naturally. There’s no doubt in my mind that these two have at least one more film together.
Anyone who doubts or questions James Cameron is out of their mind. Cameron is a visionary & Titanic is his vision come to life.
The footprint OutKast left on the rap game from a musical standpoint is undeniable.
This is a list of André and Big Boi’s profound effects on the music and mechanics of hip-hop, sounds they pursued in their work that would go on to weave themselves into the very fabric of mainstream rap today: https://t.co/EZHnjBdG1R
