NEW: A three-year moratorium on charter schools in Rhode Island has cleared the General Assembly and is heading to Gov. McKee's desk
McKee told me he has not decided if he'll sign it. He supports a moratorium but is not sold on lowering the charter cap

Thank you @ProvidenceEye for lifting up our community’s voice around Gilbert Stuart, and thank you Councilman Juan M. Pichardo for hosting the recent community tour.
Last year, after holding a community meeting on Gilbert Stuart, I introduced a resolution to renovate the school and transform it into a bilingual education program. The School Board passed this bold resolution, affirming our shared belief that bilingual education is the future for our students.
Through various meetings, the district explained that renovation would cost significantly more than new construction. After also meeting with hundreds of parents, it became clear that the building is simply too old to safely hold our children. Families in Providence deserve more — they deserve safe, modern schools that meet the needs of today and tomorrow.
As your Providence School Board Member representing Region 4 (Wards 8, 9, and 10), I know Gilbert Stuart is more than just a building. For nearly a century, it has carried the memories, struggles, and dreams of South Providence families. Saying goodbye is not easy — I feel that sadness with you.
But I also carry hope. The new Gilbert Stuart will be a bilingual, 21st-century school, where our children’s languages are celebrated as gifts, not treated as barriers. Together, we will ensure this new chapter honors the past while building a brighter future.
I promise to keep listening, to stand with families, and to fight for a school that truly reflects the heart of South Providence.
I will be sharing more announcements regarding Gilbert Stuart later this week. Please stay tuned, and don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at [email protected] if you have any concerns or thoughts to share.
With care and gratitude,
— Night Jean Muhingabo
Providence School Board Region 4 (wards 8,9 and 10)

Myself and a few community members recently penned a ProJo OpEd strongly opposing the Gilbert Stuart demo - it’s a highly renovatable building and the demo is incredibly polluting. Also, as a longtime public school teacher, the educational arguments from RIDE are top shelf BS. OpEd screenshots:

@StephMachado This is an all out war by the Rhode Island Department of Education on the teachers union and public education in Providence.
I’m ready to take the necessary steps to defend our public institutions even if it costs me.
"If I could give you one thought, it would be to lift someone up. Lift a stranger up - lift her up. I would ask you, mother and father, brother and sister, lovers, mother and daughter, father and son, lift someone. The very idea of lifting someone up will lift you, as well."
