@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Fluency through number sense is an alternative to timed math tests. The tests would focus more on number sense rather than speed. Integrating fluency interviews, 5-minute chats with the students, is also an alternative because it gives us an insight into their way of thinking.

Building number sense allows the students to break numbers apart and make problems easier to solve. The students can use manipulatives and participate in "Number Talks" to think flexibly.
