@SHHouses Replace with a wired smart thermostat. No more battery problems, you gain remote troubleshooting abilities, and your local utility company might even rebate you most of the cost.
@McKinneyJacob98 @Budgetdog_@upshotwealth@BestInterest_JC If an emergency would mean going into credit card debt or unable to pay, e-fund should be in cash. OTOH, if you have enough resources where an emergency might mean sub-optimally selling an investment, investing part of it (conservatively) is ok.
@GoCurryCracker Does percentage of home value make sense if you're in a market where your home value has shot up or doubled in the last couple of years?
It's #PrimeDay! You'll see tons of articles about deals on gadgets, but don't get caught in the hype. I like this sale more as a chance to get a good deal on mundane essentials - stuff you needed anyway!
@kateorawan@makingmsimple One might say "well if that's the case how far should I push it, perhaps I should take money out of my house to invest as much as possible?" but a good way to balance risk is to have a mortgage payment that is affordable.
@kateorawan@makingmsimple Over many years and larger sums of money, the difference is much more significant. Of course, investing carries some risk - could be much better or worse than 7% return. But it's likely you'll come out far ahead in the long run.
@kateorawan@makingmsimple Average stock market return 7%. Say your mortgage rate is 3%. You earn 4% by investing. For example, imagine you invest £2000 and earn £140 this year (7%). Since you didn't throw that £2000 at your mortgage, you owe £60 in interest. You pocket £80.
Latest #DIY project was putting sliding shelves in my kitchen cabinets. Had them custom made but installed them myself, saving $600 vs hiring someone. Only needed a drill, screwdriver, and two hours. What's a project you've done yourself to save money?
