Our afternoon was full of time hearing about lesson plan ideas from various master teachers who developed content during last year's Stony the Road conference. So many wonderful ideas about how to incorporate the lesser-known elements of the civil rights era.

It was our second day in Birmingham. We began with a great tour of the Vulcan statue and then our own private tour of the Sloss Furnace.

We learned a lot about the beginnings of the post-civil war labor leasing...when jaywalking or or not having work papers could get black men and women years working in coal mines.

I knew so little about Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and the Historical Bethel Baptist Church before today.

I can't believe I didn't take a picture of the awesome meal that members of Bethel Baptist Church provided for us.

Day one in Birmingham: I can tell this is going to be a transformative week. I am feeling incredibly grateful for this opportunity.
