A couple of people messaged me about classroom ideas. Here’s what I implement.
-I send home the Fundations Sound Cards, with every student, at the beginning of the year and post a video on Class Dojo on how to use the cards…..
It also opened up discussion on how WE plan to get them there. **If anyone wants any resources please let me know. I also do the exact same thing for Math.
We discussed what the expectations were for the next 9 weeks and they were given a “Kindergarten Progress Report.” Which was something our team created that has our essential standards, for the year, broken down. This allowed them to see the absolute must “knows” for the year.
-At parent conferences, I sent home a bag of stuff to work on at home. I didn’t assume the parents would know what I wanted them to do. For some parents, I even used the materials and taught them how to help their child at home.
If they get it right they put the card down. If they get it wrong they help the student by saying the letter, a picture to go with it, and sound. Then they put the card at the back of the pile to review again. This has made a HUGE difference.
-We do peer tutoring often. I put a “Ready” student with a “In Need of Support” student and have them work together. For example, they may work on identifying letters. One student will hold up a card and ask the other student what letter it is.
We review this chart daily and discuss our progress. They really enjoy this! Plus, it teaches them to set goals early. (I have attached a picture for reference)
-They have individual goal cards that I either put a sticker on or hole punch once they reach that goal.
-I make a classroom “goal chart” every two weeks. Sometimes I make two if it needs to be differentiated. For example, I may make a goal chart for the kids that have a goal of knowing so many sounds and another one for the students that need to know so many letters.
-I do weekly “quick checks” and send a letter home showing their parents what letters and sounds they know. (I have attached a picture for reference) -Every single time we transition I have the letter cards in my pocket and we review them.
They’re 1.5 months ahead of schedule!! The one student that isn’t there YET is still meeting grade level expectations because he knows all the letters we’ve covered in class. I think they deserve to be celebrated Our next goal is for them to read and spell 4 out of 5 trick words!
🗣️NO EXCUSES! Here’s our weekly update. We didn’t reach 100%, but we did reach 95% (19 out of 20 students) that knows all 52 letters and 26 sounds. I have 6 ESL students and 5 students with an IEP. All my students have worked so hard to reach their goal and I’m so proud of them.
We create goals and we work hard to achieve each goal!
These are differentiated goals that we review daily. Our goals are based off the letters/sounds we’ve learned so far. We still have 9 days left, to master these goals, and some students have already reached their goal!
