@Yankees Can a similar announcement be made early tomorrow 5/24 whether postponed or delayed? would be good to know before making the trip to the stadium.
@Damian87383@zbritton As long as the rotation is still doing as well as they have been, and with Cole coming back, I think they have to keep running him out there. I don't think extended rest will do him any good, and its not like JC is any better to pick up the slack
@Damian87383@zbritton I think this last message hits the nail on the head. If the Yanks didnt have mcmahon, grisham, and jazz struggling overall, Wells' offensive weakness would be so much less of a problem considering his defense is amongst the top in the sport
@MattHladik919@Matt_Stormz27@BrandonTierney I agree - if we didnt have other zeros, Wells' lack of offense wouldnt be as big of an issue because of his defense. The Yankees just need to replace JC with a righty option to bring in vs lefties in big spots. Wells still manages the staff extremely well which is priority
@mikedorb1@sodjohn12300@willNYYanks i agree that his offense has been very substandard so far but everyone seems to forget that catcher is a defense first position and he is a very good defensive catcher and also calling games for a top rotation in baseball. so he has a lot of value still outside of offense.
@YankeesSavant I am admittedly a big Wells fan, but yes his offense this season has been disappointing. However, he has a .320 OBP despite hitting .180, and i think the fact he is in the 96th percentile in fielding runs saved and the staff loves him counts for a lot, or at least it should.
@The_True_15@SavageNtheBox 96th percentile in fielding run value but he is horrible defensively? greatly disappointing at the plate, sure... but horrible defensive catcher is flat out wrong (though he is still rocking a .320 OBP
@AndrewJano24@dnasty2014@TalkinYanks I think the big issue is he was hyped as an offensive bat that could barely catch. Now we are getting the opposite. I still think he figures it out. But his defense and a decent OBP are good enough for me as long as we are winning.
Austin Wells last 4 games (15 PA)
.400 OBP
.900 OPS
20.0% BB rate
1 HR
He has better underlying metrics this year (92nd and 93rd percentile Average EV and Hard Hit %) and improved his chase rate to 2024 levels
Small sample, but I might bring back the top 5 catcher discussion…
@Cmack_7@Yankees@StarrCompanies Lets be fair, Ben Rice was benched for Goldschmidt, not Wells. Rice is a 1B, and not a catcher at the MLB level right now.
Everyone calling for Ben Rice to catch over Austin Wells just because of hitting... Defense exists in baseball. Wells is a much better defender behind the plate. Plus, we don't need Rice getting beat up back there. Let him focus on 1B and mashing the ball, let Wells catch.
@KenScudero one bad throw does not change my view of him defensively. he was 4th in defensive war last year in the league. I stand by what i said. Thanks for checking in tho
