So much joy at @ArkSoaneAcademy this morning for our first ever results day as Team MFL🎉✨Absolutely thrilled to see so many of our students securing top grades across French and Spanish, including 24 grade 9s! 🇫🇷🇪🇸 So grateful to be a part of this very special place.
Massive congratulations to Ark Soane for a sterling first set of GCSE results. This is the power of teaching explicitly, a culture of inspiring kids to work hard & a curriculum rich in knowledge.
Today our founding cohort received their GCSE results.
90% of students achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths
75% achieved grades 9-5 in English and Maths
54% of all grades awarded were a 7 or above
75% of students achieved the EBacc
We are so proud of them all.
This is not an April Fool!
At 11.05pm on April 1st the documentary Better Off Dead? will be broadcast @BBCTwo
If you can't watch then, it's still available on iPlayer
It's an @RTS_media award winning doc & might just make you think a little differently about assisted suicide?
Actually the strongest link between school and prison according to the data is not exclusion.
It’s illiteracy.
So synthetic phonics, explicit vocabulary instruction and guided reading might be a better intervention line…
Fascinating first day in the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill committee, hearing evidence from experts (most of them pro assisted dying). Main takeaway: it really isn't clear what shape this Bill will be in when it comes back to the Commons. Issues that arose:
Direct instruction is joyful & leads pupils to success. Here is a *clip* where I use high frequency & high participation questioning in 3 phases:
1. Check for listening
2. Rehearsal
3. Check for understanding
Established routines: all hands up, turn & talk, SLANT & ruler reading
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but learning requires repetition
and repetition requires patience
and patience is not ‘fun.’
So what? Not everything is fun all the time- that doesn’t mean we don’t do it.
Telling kids otherwise is doing them a disservice.

*NEW post* Becoming Better People.
Do your pupils become more polite, more hard working & more responsible each year they progress through school?

On average, teachers at @ArkSoaneAcademy observed 40+ lessons & were given feedback on 40+ lessons since September! This truly low stakes, high frequency feedback culture is key to rapid staff development. Want to join us? We're recruiting across subjects! https://t.co/6QOl0mWf1m
'Many MPs, in five- or ten-years’ time, will claim sheepishly that ‘we didn’t know this would happen’, or ‘we didn’t vote for this’ when the disabled and the vulnerable are killed. But MPs cannot be allowed to claim ignorance.'

Since joining @ArkSoaneAcademy 2 weeks ago as Head of Science, I have loved it!
What a privilege to work in a school where teaching and wider school life has been so joyful and exciting. A real team effort from everyone who works at Soane.
The top three reason for this:
Schools that parents want to send their children to are only ‘selective’ in the sense that every school can be, and criticising them for this factor is the best way to demonstrate that you would simply prefer schools not to be so good that parents want to send their children there.
Today is the big day!
