… 父は衆議院議員をつとめた井深彦三郎、明治学院総理の井深梶之助は伯父と名門の家系に生まれた。

同志社女学校（現在の同志社女子大学）専門学部英文科卒業後、長崎県立長崎高等女学校の英語教師となったが、1919年ハンセン病と診断されて神山復生病院に隔離入院。

3年後の1922年になってそれは誤診だったと判明し、家族は引き取ろうとした。

◆ 地位も名誉も捨てて

実家に帰れば、名門家の令嬢として豊かな結婚生活が約束されていた。

しかし八重は、ハンセン病患者を献身的に看護する院長ドルワール・ド・ドルワール・ド・レゼーの姿に感銘を受け病院に留まることを決意。

レゼー神父の崇高な姿に心打たれた八重は、地位や名誉など〈虚しいもの〉を棄て、院長の裏方として生涯を捧げ、患者といっしょに名もない共同墓地に葬られた。
