Tokyo Rope Opera
Many of the works in this series ask very little of the model in a literal sense.
Often, she simply stands there alone.
But I think that kind of stillness can be demanding. When there is no obvious action to hide behind, expression has to come from somewhere else. A face, a hand, the way the body carries time.
Akane has become someone I trust deeply as a model.
Perhaps I felt an immediate familiarity because we share the same name. Akane is also my real name.
But beyond that small coincidence, what I admire is the precision of her expression. Her face changes very little, yet something is always happening. The same is true of her hands, her posture, the smallest shifts in her body.
Sometimes I honestly wonder whether she needs rope at all.
Her body is already speaking.
Tokyo’s summer is finally beginning to loosen its grip.
And I find myself returning again to these quiet images of her simply being there.
