Modern Indian trains have received a significant upgrade, all electric and zero emission. The next challenge is making them run faster—potentially at 2x or even 3x their current average speeds. The rolling stock is already capable; what’s needed now are investments in track upgrades, signalling, and control systems. As railways modernize, technologies such as AI-enabled traffic management, moving-block signalling, and higher levels of automation could play a major role in increasing capacity, safety, and speed, much like modern automated (driverless) metro systems we already have.
