After finishing Pls Love, here’s my personal take:
Pan is essentially the burden carrier for her family, especially financially. On top of that, she also carries the weight of Peem’s emotions. Pan tends to avoid conflict and keeps her feelings to herself, which can sometimes come across as running away from problems rather than confronting them. However, this seems rooted in the trauma of her family life. She has learned to stay silent, accept the circumstances, even the verbal abuse from her father so that others around her can live more comfortably. That is probably why she takes a lot of verbal nonsense from Peem as well. Her family are a bunch of wet lettuce, and her dad in particular is especially a pathetic man.
Peem, on the other hand, is a character with several layers. Much of her charm comes from the comedic elements, especially the way the author writes the voices in her head. At the same time, she’s a bit of a loser when it comes to love, because why keep going to a club and spending money on someone you claim to hate? Baffles me. Still, when Peem loves, she loves intensely. She’s extremely hot tempered, the words she utters out her mouth is so hurtful and just outright rude for those who have to listen to it, with Pan often taking the brunt of her frustration. Words stick with someone for the rest of their lives.
Despite that, I do believe Peem genuinely loves Pan in her own way even if her actions and words don’t align. She’s not actually ashamed to be seen with her, even if she says otherwise, and her underlying intentions feel protective. In her own way, she seems to want to care for Pan and improve her life. It could be the case that cause of her childhood trauma and what she always believed to be a ‘bad’ profession, she becomes rude as a way to reject her feelings, but still doesn’t excuse her harsh words. That said, I struggle with the derogatory language she use towards Pan when she assumes she’s a sex worker. Regardless of someone’s profession, no one deserves that kind of treatment. Peem’s prejudice clearly stems from her own childhood trauma, which explains a lot about why she behaves the way she does, but it doesn’t make those moments any easier to overlook as a reader. What do you mean that most of the time she’s really said anything polite to Pan was during their intimate moments? Come on😣 (obviously she was nice near the end)
As for the story itself, it delivers exactly what we signed up for: enemies to lovers, plenty of jealousy, and lots of steamy scenes. As someone who has watched Channel 3 productions since I was a kid, I hope they give this series care and justice. So many social topics to touch upon with sensitivity. If the series is produced well and the characters are given the depth they deserve, it could be a real hit.
