As a woman who grew up in Iran, I understand why many Iranian women react so vehemently and viscerally to this gesture of solidarity. Encounters with the morality police were (and probably still are) an all-consuming part of women’s everyday lives in Iran. I completely understand their experience of the hijab as an instrument of state coercion and gendered restriction.
But as an anthropologist of the United States, I also understand the danger of importing that experience into Western contexts uncritically; without reckoning with what the same sign signifies in a different context. In the West, the hijab often indexes membership in marginalized Muslim minorities. Therefore, uncritical, universal anti-hijab critiques can easily reinforce Islamophobic and racist discourses.
The problem is not that Iranian women’s experience of the hijab is false. It is that the hijab’s meaning is neither portable nor universal: its social and political meaning changes with context.
As for this particular gesture of solidarity, these French women are correctly recognizing that the policing of women’s bodies takes different forms. Forcing a woman to wear the hijab and forcing her to remove it are different expressions of the same underlying claim: that others may decide what she can or cannot do with her body. A woman’s attire is hers to choose and so are all her other decisions concerning her bodily autonomy.
🚨A close source to Little Mix revealed that Leigh-Anne and Perrie would be ready for THE comeback, including a new tour. The timing is still not right for JADE, who prioritize a second album before considering a reunion. The three continue to support and are proud of each other.
Say what you want about nctzens but the fact that the neobong is universally known to show up at non nct events means nctzens show up and support artists constantly and I find that truly endearing 💚
The concept of Gloria Steinem dying with less rights than the ones she fought for is one of the most devastating fucking things in the world I HATE what we’ve become
ADÉLA says she’d love to collaborate with JADE:
“I would do anything with JADE. She’s amazing. I’m such a fan. I’ve been a fan for a while – also because [of] Little Mix. So massive. Soundtrack to my childhood. JADE solo – it’s so good. JADE, we gotta get talking!”
there’s something genuinely heartbreaking about someone spending their entire life fighting for women’s freedom, only to live long enough to watch those very rights be threatened again. it’s an absolutely devastating thought. rip, queen 🤍
