What is happening in Iran is genuinely monstrous, even by pre-modern standards. I am, at heart, a British nationalist, and I will inevitably ignore a great deal of bad stuff happening abroad. That is simply reality. But Iran is different. The scale and cruelty of it are unbearable. It is utterly heartbreaking, and it makes me furious, despite having no familial or cultural ties to the people suffering there.
