You’re not going to win over a struggling student by beating them down. It will come through the relationship you create while you’re building them up.
Politicians and policymakers have convinced most people that a good teacher can get students, who are dealing with depression, hunger, trauma, low self-esteem and self-worth, and other issues, to learn and do well on tests without addressing all those other issues first.

FWIW, as our district considers start times: The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later to give students the opportunity to get the amount of sleep they need. Data says better test scores/grades with later starts.
