attributing it to future hitting success? Isn’t that the crux of the article?
Is the outrage because he is guessing/oversimplifying the Yankees’ intent or that people think citing EV as an underlying stat applied to analytics is somehow against the definition of the word?
@keithlaw 1/2
Verducci isn’t winning a Pulitzer from this, but is it that egregious? Isn’t analytics about taking statistics and other measurables and trying determine a pattern or predictive future outcome?
Wasn’t he suggesting the Yankees were seeing increased EV and (falsely)
@davebrooks86@JomboyMedia What if it’s the third out and he chooses not to ever release the ball and just run into the dugout? Honest question. Releasing the ball isn’t a mandatory act, is it?
@Cruelabduhl @NyTruther @PercyStaffin@Jomboy_ Exactly. If the game was played like it was 100 years ago (or 50, or even 30), rules like this wouldn’t be needed. If Aaron stepped out between pitches while Don Drysdale circled the mound each time, a pitch clock would have come when NBA shot clock originated.
@stevestone Bad news: only one team below .500 after 99 games ever won a WS.
Good news: it was last year (Braves 48-51).
Wild card spots and 12 of 30 teams earning playoff berths provide hope. In 2 months, a Game 1 with Cease to Graveman to Hendriks bridge may look quite formidable.
@baddestmamajama I’m surprised how often #2 occurs even in quality film and TV. In Winning Time, the writers had Magic Johnson utter the phrase “old heads” - popular now but nonexistent 40 years ago.
@stevestone Regardless of tonight’s output, I like the attempt more than leading off a hot HR hitter. The small increase in extra PAs in a season never seems to offset lesser high-leverage ABs offered by the lead-off spot.
