@TotalUnimodular Of course - I also don't think no one would go that far :) But if you're a student and all that you know is academia, you might get that impression. And unless professors go out of their way to show PhD students there is a whole world out there, that might be all they know.
Great point. But it's important for supervisors to stress that point more and more among students, given the numbers highlighted in the article. Professors like academia (duh) and (perhaps unconsciously) often transmit to students the idea that success means staying in it.
Another problem: because academia is also getting growingly more competitive, the experience of professors when they applied to their first position may be vastly different from those of the students.
