Without the work of Rustin, it’s hard to see how the March would have succeeded. Rustin worked quietly behind the scenes for decades to end White Supremacy but his contributions were scrubbed from the historical record, due to his sexual orientation, until the past decade or so.

King was just one of the many speakers and performers to address the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” as it was famously called. King was part of the steering committee for the March but the brains behind it were Rustin and A. Phillip Randolph.

Queer people have been in the vanguard of the fight for Civil Rights since the beginning. That’s why on this #MLKDay it makes sense to recognize the person who made arguably King’s most memorable moment possible.
