A retired rugby winger from Newcastle, Australia is teaching the NFL's $208 million sack record holder how to hit harder. He'd never heard of Myles Garrett before taking the job.

Billy Coffey got a text asking him to meet Garrett. He said no dramas and asked his mates if the guy was any good. They told him he was probably the best defensive player on earth.

Garrett just set the NFL single-season sack record, signed a five-year $208M deal with the Rams, and is paying a rugby coach to rebuild his tackling. Because rugby solved a problem American football never had to.

Rugby players bring down men Garrett's size, 273 pounds, with no helmet and no pads. Get the technique wrong and you break your own neck. So the sport spent a century perfecting the biomechanics of collisions. Where to put your head. How to time hip extension. How to transfer force through the shoulder instead of absorbing it.

American football got pads in the 1890s and outsourced technique to equipment. The armor made bad form survivable, so bad form survived.

Now the NFL is importing the science back. Coffey gives Garrett 25 technical cues before a rep and Garrett nails all 25 on the next hit. Coffey says NFL players pay him more in a week than he earns in a year at his gym back home. Since the Garrett sessions started circulating, UCLA, Ohio State, and the Cleveland Browns have all called him.
