Taxes and levies make up for almost 50% of the price of fuel per litre in Kenya. You pay for the cost of fuel plus distributor margins. The specific taxes and levies imposed on fuel in Kenya include:

-Value Added Tax (VAT)
-Excise Duty
-Road Maintenance Levy (RML)
-Petroleum Development Levy
-Railway Development Levy (RDL)
-Import Declaration Fee (IDF)
-Petroleum Regulatory Levy aka EPRA levy
-Anti-Adulteration Levy: Imposed on kerosene to discourage its use in adulterating transport fuels.
-Merchant Shipping Levy: A smaller specific fee directed towards maritime activities.

Uganda has lighter taxation per liter hence the difference in price. It also explains the difference in infrastructure.

This Finance Bill 2026 is basically telling poor Kenyans:
“Stay poor.”

A student needing a phone for online classes?
Pay more.
A mama mboga using M-Pesa?
Pay more.
A youth trying to hustle online?
Pay more.

25% excise duty on phones is madness.

And now they also want higher taxes on plastic packaging, meaning the price of nearly EVERYTHING in supermarkets will rise.
Milk, Salt, Bread.
Cooking oil, Water, Soap.

Kenyans are already drowning.
Why is this govt obsessed with making life unbearable?

A Kenyan has just beaten Safaricom PLC in court and been awarded Sh1.4 billion.

And honestly, this case is disturbing.

Peter Nthei Muoki says he developed a child-wallet concept for M-Pesa and pitched it to Safaricom in 2021.

According to court documents, he was told it wasn’t workable. Then later, Safaricom rolled out a similar feature.

He sued.

And High Court Judge Josephine Wayua Wambua Mong'are ruled in his favour.
Safaricom has now been ordered to pay him Sh1.4 billion plus annual royalties.

Imagine being told your idea won’t work, then later seeing it launched by one of the biggest companies in the country.

That’s the painful part.

Because, how many ordinary Kenyans have pitched ideas to powerful companies, been ignored, and watched those same ideas come back as products?

This case will make many innovators think twice.
