🔙 Throwback to Kigali, and to a decision that once sounded like pure science fiction.
During the Invest in Rwanda session at the Africa CEO Forum 2026, Caitlin Burton, CEO of Zipline Africa, looked back on the moment her company brought autonomous drone delivery to life in a place where, by her own account, flying drones was illegal everywhere on Earth. No country had said yes before, largely because the idea felt too hard to picture actually working out in the world. Rwanda chose to imagine it anyway, and that single choice quietly reset what was thought possible for logistics across the continent.
🛬 Her account is, above all, a story about frameworks rather than gadgets. Getting a single aircraft over the horizon required airspace regulators to write first-of-their-kind rules, health administrators to fold an untested system into the everyday delivery of care, and planners to model a return on investment for something that was, at the time, entirely hypothetical. It took a whole-of-government mandate to make it happen, and the first time Zipline ever watched its own technology disappear over the horizon, Rwandan officials were standing right beside them, seeing it for the very first time too. As she put it, "The government of Rwanda, we like to say, they lead with yes."
🌍 What started as a regulatory sandbox in Kigali has since travelled to five further markets across Africa, alongside Japan and the United States, carrying a quietly powerful lesson for the continent. The infrastructure that now moves life-saving supplies was not imported ready-made; it was co-created on Rwandan terms, through shared rules and shared ambition. That is the throwback worth holding onto as ACF 2026 reflects on Scale or Fail, because the Zipline story shows that shared frameworks, the often invisible architecture of regulation and public coordination, are frequently what decide whether a bold idea scales or stalls.

“The memorial before us is powerful, because it sets the truth in stone and protects it from the heartlessness of time, by instructing the living. It is not a validation, because none is needed. But it will stand as a mark of respect for the dignity of Rwandans and our history.” President Kagame | Inauguration of Monument in Paris honouring the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.
On the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum, President Kagame held separate meetings with Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB); Abdullah Almusaibeeh, President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA); Philippe Labonne, President of Africa Global Logistics Group (AGL); and Gabriel Sémelas Gordo, President of Airbus Africa & Middle East.
The meetings focused on strengthening partnerships and advancing investment opportunities that support Rwanda’s economic growth and transformation agenda.
The DEATH of the last Queen of Rwanda (1928--1994) 💔😭
On April 20, around 11: 30 am, soldiers invaded Queen Rosalie Gicanda's home and abducted her and six others.
Before she died, she begged her killers not to use machetes and knives. They respected her wish and shot her six times in the chest.
She was one of the first people killed in Butare, and her murder marked the start of mass killings in the area.
Approximately 7,000 Tutsis were killed on that day.

“Even in difficult times, don’t waste that time, learn from it. There are lots of lessons in difficult times. There should be lessons in good times too, meaning just don’t pass the day, and the year like that. Take something from it and associate it with a purpose, meaning a purpose of your life.” President Kagame | ASG Matriculation Ceremony.

"We cannot remain a place where people pull rocks out of the ground , which others then turn into high-tech products , and sell back to us. It is not sustainable. It is simple and clear. This will take a lot of time and effort. But Africa can do it...., Anything that can be done anywhere in this world, can also be done in Africa."
