10 June 1921. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on the island of Corfu as Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark. He was a descendant of the Danish-German house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg. He apparently regarded himself as primarily Danish.

John Smeaton, a civil engineer who designed bridges, canals, harbours and lighthouses, was born on this day 1724 in Austhorpe, east Leeds. Often regarded as the 'father of civil engineering'.

5 June 1916. Lord Kitchener (Herbert Kitchener) tha face of a famous WW1 recruitment poster drowned when HMS Hampshire sank. The news of Kitchener’s death (aged 65) was received with shock all over the British Empire.
5 June 1968. Robert F Kennedy (aged 42) was shot 3 times, once in the head, while walking through the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, USA at 12:15 AM. He was rushed to hospital, but died at 1:44 AM on 6 June 1968 without ever regaining consciousness.

Former rugby league player and coach John Kear has died at the age of 71.
Kear, one of the sport's most respected figures, passed away on Sunday while travelling back from the Challenge Cup final.
