After 1.5 years of above average precipitation & snowpack in the Colorado River Basin, complacency will set in, the drought must be over after all. But now, more than ever, is the time to reconcile with an unsustainable water supply for the SW USA. https://t.co/Xvnpikz4BG @9NEWS

So good to return to South Africa and discuss water insecurity survey findings with community leaders (and colleagues) in Langa township. Thanks @mkerwin111 and @MJMccarroll
I'm heading up to a nearby ski resort tomorrow with my mountain bike. Apparently, I'm ahead of the curve based on research published last month that predicts occasional snow-free winters for parts of Colorado in 35-60 yrs.

Oh how I miss exploring South Africa with @UofDenver students, @thomas_lavanchy, and my family. This photo of James from Cape Town in 2017 is one of my favorites, perhaps because his is now almost six feet tall and about to get his drivers permit.
Congratulations to @TJohaneman who published her undergraduate thesis based on 2018 field work in Alaska. Here is to a summer 2021 field season - anywhere!!
Published my first paper in September from my undergraduate thesis! @mkerwin111

@Katchinoff @thomas_lavanchy Abnormal ppt deficits are probably an anomaly & not the primary driver of this fire. Lodgepole forests historically burn like that every 2-3 centuries. Minimal JJA rainfall certainly reduced soil moisture & enhanced understory desiccation, but this type of fire was inevitable.
Nearby at 9,600 ft there has only been ~0.8 inches of ppt since June 30. And, last night (at 7 pm) it was 68 degrees. This would be warm for July at that elevation. Also amazing that the fire spread so rapidly given the large number of beetle-killed lodgepole which don't crown.
@thomas_lavanchy Congratulations on leading our research team and more importantly cultivating so many friendships in Cape Town with the people who showed the world what cutting-edge water conservation can look like. @Adamsonjk
Our article "Beyond 'Day Zero': insights and lessons from Cape Town (South Africa)" was selected as one of five top papers in the 2019 Editor's Choice! Well done @mkerwin111 and @Adamsonjk.
We discovered Malaysia's sublime coconut, chicken, noodle, curry soup, the Laksa, in 2009 when we lived in Western Australia. It was a once-a-week craving! I've tried to duplicate it many times over the past decade w/ limited success. Tonight could be different. #PairWithRiesling
We recommend visiting Dubrovnik, even in July. This opinion stuns us. Why? We don’t enjoy $200, non-delicious meals, sweaty/crowded cruise ship wandering, & dragon shows (actually I’ve not seen Game of Thrones - I tried twice...). But w/ a great Airbnb, Dubrovnik was a highlight.
