If you go around calling every idol or person you “like,” your oshi, oshi loses its nuance. So here’s a little brain rot from me in the early mornings. ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
Oshi is short for oshimen (also short for ichi oshi no member) which means supporting/favorite member! Keep in mind that this is not the same as liking that person. An oshi is someone you want to support, admire, and possibly recommend to others. You can have multiple oshis across multiple fandoms but most people use this term based on the genre (idols, vtubers, voice actors/celebrities, sports). Always be mindful of others when you want to “push,” or “support,” your oshi! The act of having an oshi can be separated into multiple categories these days and it’s best to educate yourself on how to use it to avoid landmines as a fan.
- Kamioshi (神推し): your #1 top favorite regardless of what fandom it is. Can be used interchangeably with geki-oshi (激推し).
-Tan-oshi (単推し): Someone who supports and is dedicated to a single person within that universe/fandom. Is subjective and may not be used interchangeably with kamioshi.
- Ni-oshi (二推し): Runner-up, is the second person you like to support.
- Ni-banme no oshi (2番目の推し): Bias wrecker. Can be your ni-oshi.
- Hako-oshi (箱推し): “box” oshi, also known as group oshi. You may have a singular oshi here but generally you do not mind supporting the people surrounding them. This is not the same as DD because you’re supporting a specific unit.
- Sai-oshi (最推し): You support multiple people but you have a favorite that you obviously support over everyone.
- Daredemo daisuki/DD (誰でも大好き): You support multiple different people across multiple fandoms. You do not necessarily have a specific person you support but enjoy multiple people almost equally. This term is very subjective to the user. This may be supporting 3 or more people across the same universe (generalized such as idols or per fandom).
Now that you know the main types of oshi (if there’s more, pls lmk 👀), why does it matter? Some people take it very seriously when it comes to supporting their oshi and certain terms have nuance based on how much dedication you have. It becomes a landmine when you meet someone who does not share the same ideal as you, thus resulting in doutan kyohi (refusal to share).
This is one reason why fan make specific accounts to support their oshis with. A lot of ppl will make separate accounts to exclusively to support specific groups or person. If you’re supporting a real person, you might be able farm interactions or likes from idols… Also- having a real person oshi may be dangerous because your oshi may see your post every now and then, toss you a like, and they may point out if you support others… don’t get put in that situation. 🫣💦 My boyfriend has been put in this situation before…
Can you have a different oshi in different fandoms or groups? Of course! There’s no problem with this but don’t be surprised if you get unfollowed by super dedicated fans. Everyone has a different level of comfort when it comes to supporting and it’s very subjected. 😭
Loving what I love… I always have to be careful how I approach others because I personally have a few landmines myself and know a lot of others who do as well. I love meeting others but my version of love may not equate to others version of love… and this is fine because I think all kinds of love should be enjoyed but don’t force things onto me that’s out of my comfort zone! It’s all meant to be fun so let’s just support what we love to the max by learning specific nuances today! (*≧∀≦*)
