This is genuinely one of the saddest stories of this World Cup.

Iran are out.

Without losing a single game.

You could literally say they were unbeaten throughout the tournament… and you’d be right.

But football can be unbelievably cruel.

A draw against Egypt.

And that Egypt game will hurt for a long, long time.

They missed a penalty. Missed several big chances.

Then in the 90+3rd minute they thought they had scored the goal that would send them through. VAR ruled it out.

A few minutes later, 90+7, they hit the crossbar.

And today, they still had hope.

An Algeria win over Austria would’ve been enough to keep their World Cup dream alive.

Then came the 90+6th minute. Austria equalised.
Just like that… Iran’s World Cup was over.

Unbeaten. A neutral goal difference.
And still eliminated.

Iran deserved so much more.

Regardless of the outcome, they represented their country with pride and competed with everyone they faced.

Nothing but respect.

Applause for what they achieved, even if the tournament ended in heartbreak. 👏🇮🇷
