The U.S. News & World Report 2022 rankings place the Simmons School in the top tier of graduate education schools. Simmons is ranked 15 in private graduate schools of education and in the top 3 of all public and private Texas schools! More information available on our blog. @SMU
Thanks much @DoctorRaq Congrats to you in your career successes and to you and your team for the excellent article, which I read on its first day out. Keep on!
"The average annual price tag for attending a college is now around $50K."
No, no, no - & a prof @ NYU should know better. 35% of UGs are in CCs, and 45% in public 4-yrs (and mostly in-state), where costs are well below $50K, & this is before grant aid

It was a lot of fun to work on this op-ed with @dhfeld1 for @USATODAY. We argue that there is a progressive case AGAINST free college, and suggest a series of alternatives that we believe better achieve the goals of equity, access, and success. https://t.co/QAm9GPDQbZ
As a campus leader I like many colleagues lamented the narrow focus on prestige & other inputs by many #college ranking systems, and therefore appreciated Washington Monthly’s focus on social mobility & public service, in add. to that of research. Nice work @rkelchen & @monthly
Our College Guide's Data Editor @rkelchen explains our approach to ranking schools based on how well they promote social mobility, high-quality research, and a spirit of service. Read his interview with @ConversationEDU: https://t.co/9MXPNB6tbc
Insightful piece by @jillbarshay@hechingerreport on rise of the predictive-analytics industry as relates to #college success; on improvements to student retention at @GeorgiaStateU; & on importance of data use by departmts in aligning curriculum and improving teaching/ advising
.@apmreports @sashaaslanian and I just produced a radio documentary about big data on campus. It’s about how colleges are tracking student data to boost graduation rates. https://t.co/0mBvTkEoYt
Thanks @DTandberg! Bc so few in “our” field cared for this work at time of my dissert. or when I invited Hearn to coauthor the 2003 @Division_L PEA Yearbook, I’m grateful for early encouragement by K. Meier, J. Kingdon, K. Wong, @Michael_Kirst, B. Malen, the Berry’s & M. Mumper
The absence of many specialty journals with “State Politics” in the title does not equate to a “dearth of social-science research on state politics and government.” In fact past decades have witnessed an intensified focus on state politics & policy. Utter nonsense @chronicle
States play an outsized role in shaping our politics, but there is a dearth of social-science research on state politics and government. Why? https://t.co/PBzi1bgoyw
@BowTiePolitics @etkeld@chronicle Some other great politics-focused researchers of state higher education policy to follow if you are interested in such things:
@AmyLiphd, @bakerdphd, @GandaraDenisa, @mkmclendon, @wdoyle42, @DTandberg, @DKramerII, Erik Ness, Jennifer Delaney, and Amanda Rutherford.

ED School deans can spend - and misspend - their time in countless ways. In the wake of yet another school shooting, I’m impressed by the commitment of Dean Christopher Morphew @educationdean and his Hopkins faculty in making schools safer and healthier #JHUSafeSchools
Announced today by @educationdean, #JHUSOE will be leading a new center, the Johns Hopkins Center for Safe and Healthy Schools. The Center aims to help schools across the country address complex challenges & promote the well-being of students and educators. #EWA19#JHUSafeSchools
Big congrats @wdoyle42! You’re richly deserving. Hiring you was just about the best thing we did and I benefited enormously during those years from your intelligence, creativity, professionalism and good humor
I wish all this reporting on the college admissions scandal was paired with stories about how vital community colleges and state universities are to the strength and fairness of our country.
Indeed, higher ed would save many tens of millions of dollars annually and lay off thousands of staff who previously attended closely to rankings efforts
President Powers also was remarkably gracious and, of course, a terrific teacher. He spent time, he didn’t have, meeting with classes from the graduate course on Higher Education Policy that I taught while at @smusimmons. @texasex#HookEm
