6/6 In the words of Lincoln, our system of government is of the people, by the people, for the people.
And as I posted yesterday, whatever “side” you’re on, we all should respect the outcome.
Our justice system — as imperfect as it is — is foundational to our democracy.
5/6 A jury of 12 ordinary citizens convicted unanimously on all 34 counts. That’s the way it works. Trump is entitled to — & will indeed — appeal. That’s also how it works.
And we got to the end without riots or incidents.
4/6 This trial had nothing to do with politics — or wealth. It was fair & it was just. You may or may not like or agree with the outcome, but…
The system worked — it wasn’t rigged. Both sides selected the jury, presented/heard testimony, presented/saw evidence…
3/6 But it is a good day for the American justice system and the rule of law, institutions that — quite frankly — have come under tremendous pressure. The court system is not perfect, but it’s the best in the world and has served us for 248 years.
2/6 This is not a time for celebration or joy: it’s a shameful day in American history — one that has no precedent and one that none of us wants to become a new normal.
1/6 🧵
I’ve given a lot of thought about yesterday’s verdict, and after reading all the venom & ridiculous takes, IMO the bottom line is this…
If you’re excited about the outcome, don’t get too excited.
If you’re angry, don’t get too angry…
The verdict is in.
Whatever the decision — and whatever “side” you’re on — we all should respect the outcome.
The rule of law — and the justice system itself — is foundational to our system of democracy.
