While I was in a taxi, I saw my girlfriend getting fetched by a Polo.

We had planned that we going to town, suddenly I see her entering a Polo. The guy even opened the front door for her, my heart started to do that Toss dance.

That time I had just paid my taxi fare, the driver asked, “Niyingaki bafo?”, I replied “Bengicabanga ukuthi ngiyi one kuye Grootman, but ikhona enye itsotsi”, Kuthiwe “Emalini bhuti niyingaki?”…

The lady next to me could see that I'm looking at my girlfriend noBhut wePolo and she asked, “Uyabazi labantu?” I told her that's my girlfriend. The lady avele athi “Driver landa leya moto”. People asked why? The lady replied “Ningabuzi ngithi mayilandwe leya Moto”, Aike!! abethe iU-turn uDriver, we were now behind the Polo.

Babuze abahlali ukuthi, what is happening? Ngivele ngithi “Loya bhut utshontsha izimbuzi zabantu and k'dala efunwa”. That time, I didn't even know him, abahlali now backed me up “Landa lo msunu Driver”, luckily the was a Speed Hump so our taxi managed to overtake them yama phambikwabo.

Abahlali didn't ask questions, bafike bavule umnyango, “Ye wena satan, ziphi izimbuzi zabantu?!!”, The guy was so confused, when he tried fighting back, they said, “Oh! Unamandla, so usuthi izimbuzi”. Kwedlula enye iTaxi babuza “Kwenzekani?” they explained to them, they also decided to join in, “Yeses! Khipha izimbuzi sthende” zangena iimpama. That time my girlfriend wants to run, kuthiwe “Khipha lezo zimbuzi nawe?!”. Abuze uBabe “kwenzekani kanti?!”, I pretended like I didn't know her. Zangena impama, “Woza wena Queen yeZimbuzi”. Babethwa till the police arrived.

I later found out that's her brother. 😭😭

Shona writers often referred to the Ndebele with a derogatory term “madzviti” which could also mean “ngozi” or evil spirits. The Ndebele were presented as savages and brutal murderers in Shona literary writings. A good example of such writers is Patrick Chakaipa, a product of mission education and an ordained Roman Catholic priest. One of the paragraphs in Chapter 11 of Chakaipa’s novel Karikoga Gumiremiseve reads as follows when translated to English:

It was the practice of the Ndebele people to fight the Zezuru [a Shona sub- ethnic group] and raid their grain, cattle and goats. Sometimes they raided their beautiful women and young men who became their slaves. Sometimes when they arrived at a homestead they burnt all huts, murdered all old and ugly women. They were feared such that when one warned, “The Ndebele are coming!” all Zezurus would run away and take refuge in caves in the mountains. When Zezurus harvested their grain they hid it in the caves, together with their goats.

This is a typical example of the extent to which the Ndebele people were presented as barbaric by Shona literary writers. These writers instilled hateful feelings in the hearts of most Shona readers against the Ndebele. Ironically, the above novel by Chakaipa won the first fiction prize in 1956. The novel was said to be “enjoyed by school children.”
