Roy Orbison was born this day, April 23, 1936, in Vernon, Texas.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Today marks what would have been his 90th birthday.

Bono and The Edge wrote “She’s a Mystery to Me” for him. The song was recorded for Orbison’s 1989 album Mystery Girl, released posthumously.

The song has some of Bono’s finest biblical imagery, such as “Am I left to burn, and burn eternally?”

Orbison identified as a Christian, particularly in the later years of his life. In interviews from the mid-1980s until his death in 1988, Orbison openly described a personal spiritual renewal that he characterized as developing a relationship with Jesus Christ. He spoke of faith putting life in a new perspective, and turning his will over to God during times of personal tragedy. He referred to a “born-again Christian experience” but disliked that specific label because he felt it was overused and misused.

Orbison once said: “I’ve been developing a personal relationship with myself and with Jesus Christ and it just kind of smooths everything. If you have faith, then your whole life is put in a new perspective.”
