@brianmccormick Interesting. Just spent two weeks visiting and attending practices at several top 20 D1 schools (lacrosse, not basketball) and not one was lifting at 6am. There was a very obvious and intentional effort to ensure their athletes were properly rested.
🚨ABSURD🚨
Ohio State cornerback Lorenzo Styles Jr. just ran a 4.28, 40-YARD DASH at the #NFL combine
One of the fastest 40 times ever for a cornerback at the combine.
Lorenzo is the brother of OSU superstar Sonny Styles.
A family filled with freaks
Similar thing should be happening in lacrosse w/ field dimensions and goal size. Also very highly recommend all young players begin w/ the Stringking Junior sticks so that the shaft is proportional to the child's hand... Should not be using cut down men's shafts w/ kids IMO.
Smart model. Putting kids on lowered hoops with small balls helps them develop at the correct level relative to their proportions
I wish more youth programs jn the US would do this rather than force 8 year olds to play on ten foot hoops
WHY kids need quality training!
1) Kids play sports so much now that they are becoming physically illiterate. Lots of high skill… but not always lots of high movement capabilities.. Long term? This is no bueno.
2) Increasing speed. The windows of opportunity for best enhancing traits of speed for athletes occur between 8-12 years old. This does not mean that kids cannot get faster past that age, but why WOULDNT we want our kids to become faster. Outside of genetics, it needs to be trained!
3) Less likely to burnout, have injuries and increased chances of being a healthy active adult. Let’s remember… 99% of the kids playing sports will not go pro. Let’s set them up for life skills!
Want your players to get their heads up and scan the ice more? 🏒
Instead of using drills with pre-planned shoulder checks, add game like context (chaos) to your activities. 👇
If we accept the undeniable truth that optimal development environments are vastly different depending on the age of the child, why do we put our kids into programs where the core component is the same from 3rd-12th grade?
Why would you ever believe, that despite an enormous range in developmental stages from 8-18, putting all kids into the same tryout/travel/tournament culture is the best way to build healthy kids who can reach their full potential?
Couldn't agree more. Big part of his post was overall volume at a young age, especially when in a tournament environment. 10v10 lacrosse on an NCAA size field for anyone under middle-school age is wildly absurd.
Why are 10 yr olds playing on bigger fields than Shellenberger? Someone make it make sense.
"No time to devote improving physical qualities as the priority." 🎯
Keep the main thing the main thing. For single-sport athletes especially, there should absolutely be a portion of the year where the main thing is very clearly what coach has described here.
I train a lot of soccer ⚽️ players online and it’s a nationwide issue. Male and female soccer athletes play 12-month seasons with no real time off the ball. No recovery. No time to devote improving physical qualities as the priority. Injury rates in this sport will keep rising.
