What happened during today’s vote on Kemi Badenoch's amendment?

1. MPs considered Kemi Badenoch’s amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill. The Bill includes measures like stricter home-schooling rules, funding for free breakfast clubs, and limits on branded school uniform items that parents have to buy.

2. Badenoch’s amendment aimed to block the Bill’s progress, arguing it undermines school freedom and accountability. However, it also called for a national inquiry into historical child sexual exploitation. Had Badenoch's amendment passed, it would have effectively stopped the Bill from progressing and would not have triggered the establishment of a national inquiry, as it only 'called upon' the Government to do so.

3. Therefore, Labour MPs weren’t simply voting on whether to create an inquiry into grooming gangs, but rather on whether to kill the Bill entirely.
