Also born on this day in 1890, the revolutionary couturier Elsa Schiaparelli. An Italian aristocrat, she founded Maison Schiaparelli in Paris in 1927, which she managed from the 1930s to the 1950s. Schiaparelli's designs celebrated Surrealism and she often collaborated with artists such as Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau. Her collections were famous for their unconventiona themes, such as insects, animals or trompe-l'œil. Along with Coco Chanel, her greatest rival, she is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in 20th Century fashion. Her clients included the heiress Daisy Fellowes, Mae West and, most famously, Wallis Simpson, for whom she designed the legendary "lobster dress", pictured below.
