Imam Abidin Ayup was detained in early 2017 and was hospitalised in May 2017.

Imam Abidin Ayup is a respected and prominent Uyghur Muslim leader and he was the Imam of Qayraq Mosque in Atush's Bostan neighbourhood for around 30 years. He also worked as a professor at the Xinjiang Islamic Institute, before retiring around two decades ago.

The Chinese Communist Party refers to Imam Abidin as "an inheritor and transmitter of religious extremist thought".

His whereabouts and health status is unknown. Is he alive or dead?
