Let’s correct the corrective:

The Shah actually traded away longstanding Iranian claims on Bahrain and acceded to whatever a UN mission (not technically a plebiscite or referendum) to the island would find, which ended up being that the residents wanted an independent and sovereign Bahrain.

And when the Shah did intervene militarily in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, it was in defense of the status quo and pro-Western order, as was seen in the case of the military support to Sultan Qaboos (along with the British) to put down the communist Dhofar rebellion backed by the Marxists in South Yemen.

And in the Shah’s criticisms of Israel (vs the deep intelligence, economic, and security cooperation that existed between the states despite those criticisms), we have to look at where is there breadth and where is there depth. How did the Shah pursue a sovereign foreign policy within the contours of the Cold War and the alignment there? And where did his personal views about the Arab-Israeli conflict fit into that? And why or why not did or didn’t these statements factor into Israeli thinking or perceptions of Iran at the time? That is what matters most for the contrast/comparison IMHO.

Zooming out, I think it’s fair to say Israel would welcome any government in Tehran today where the missiles stop flying and money/munitions stop being transferred to terrorists. And the GCC would welcome any non-irredentist and status quo oriented Iranian foreign policy in the Persian Gulf.

Are Iranians not the ‘right’ kind of victims?

Four years after Mahsa Jina Amini’s death, I find myself asking a question that has weighed heavily on my mind: Why does the suffering of Iranians so often seem to come with conditions attached?

A deeply emotional conversation with Azadeh Afsahi, who helps survivors of torture and political imprisonment rebuild their lives, made me wonder whether Iranians simply don't fit the world's idea of what a victim is supposed to look like.

My interview with Masoud Nourmohammadi, whose 19-year-old twin cousins face death and decades in prison after joining protests in Iran, left me asking why their names have not become known around the world.

And my friend Zineb Riboua's brilliant work on Third-Worldism helped me understand a deeper ideological contradiction: When opposition to Western power becomes the defining measure of moral legitimacy, what happens to the people oppressed by governments that claim to resist the West?

What happens when Iranians reject the Islamic Republic's ideology and demand the very freedoms that some of its Western sympathizers associate with the powers they oppose? Does their suffering become less worthy of recognition because their aspirations challenge a preferred political narrative?

In my latest piece, I explore why solidarity with Iranian victims can become entangled in geopolitical loyalties, why the extraordinary achievements of Iranian survivors can make them harder to recognize as victims, and why the people of Iran deserve to be heard on their own terms.

Iranians should not have to be the right kind of victims to deserve the world's compassion. They should simply have to be human.

Some people are getting needlessly steamed up about this disinformation centre. Yes we must guard against over-reach, but greater capacity to counter state-sponsored disinformation from Russia, Iran and China is needed against their concerted campaigns undermine faith in our country.
