Over 58,000 fake items worth R8.3 million confiscated as Gauteng Police intensify raids on illicit traders across six cities

The Gauteng Police have confiscated counterfeit and illicit goods worth about R8.3 million during coordinated operations conducted across the province between 6 and 16 October 2025. The operations targeted the sale and distribution of fake products in major commercial areas.

Working with brand protectors, the Commercial Crimes Unit, and the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, the Counterfeit Unit carried out raids in Sandton, Johannesburg Central, Vanderbijlpark, Pretoria Central, Temba, and Jeppe. These efforts aimed to clamp down on businesses selling illegal and unregulated merchandise.

Police reported the recovery of approximately 58,250 counterfeit items, including cellphone accessories, toys, consumables, clothing, accessories, and illicit pharmaceutical products. The total estimated value of the seized goods stood at R8,367,200.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting consumers and legitimate businesses from counterfeit and contraband goods that threaten both public health and the local economy.
