Why I like $CGDV (Capital Group Dividend Value ETF) as a long term investment and compliment to $SCHD
• Actively managed by Capital Group (the team behind American Funds). While the ETF is fairly new, the managers have a long and successful track record.
• Focuses on high-quality companies with a value tilt that also pay dividends. It offers an above-market yield, but it’s not a high-yield ETF.
• Seeks to combine capital appreciation, dividend growth, and a modest starting yield rather than maximizing current income.
• Has outperformed the S&P 500 since inception while also tending to hold up better during many market pullbacks.
• The 0.33% expense ratio is higher than index ETFs, but you’re paying for active management, deep fundamental research, and an experienced investment team.
• Uses a unique multi-manager approach where each manager runs an independent sleeve of the portfolio, bringing different perspectives and reducing reliance on a single decision-maker.
• Managers have the flexibility to trim or exit positions when valuations become stretched, fundamentals weaken, or more attractive opportunities arise.
My favorite part: It lets me participate in market upside while potentially providing better downside protection than the S&P 500. It pairs really well with $SCHD. The two ETFs currently have only about 6% overlap, giving me exposure to a much broader set of high-quality dividend-paying companies.
The starting yield is lower than many dividend ETFs, but I’m comfortable with that because I believe the focus on quality creates the potential for stronger long-term capital appreciation and dividend growth.
As always, this is just how I think about investing. Do your own research and decide what fits your own goals and risk tolerance.
