Don’t believe me? Read the investor presentation Cleveland-Cliffs gave to its own stakeholders and filed with the SEC. 🔎📊 $CLF

Under “Clear Path to Close,” the October 8, 2024 presentation explicitly states:
“ICA Undertakings support net benefit to Canada”
“Commitments to maintain employment levels in Canada”
Cliffs presented those commitments as part of the pathway to securing approval for its acquisition of Stelco. This was the company’s own explanation to investors. ⚖️
And what were shareholders getting in return? An established Canadian steelmaker that would diversify Cliffs’ customer base and expand its exposure to the North American spot market. 🏭📈
The presentation estimated that approximately 95% of Stelco’s sales were spot sales. The acquisition would bring spot sales to roughly 27% of the combined company’s volume, providing greater insight into that market.
Cliffs also highlighted the acquisition’s cost advantage in its July announcement: purchasing Stelco cost substantially less than building an equivalent replacement mill in the United States, and Stelco’s cost structure was lower than a new U.S. mill would offer.

That was the investment case: acquire Canadian operations with cost advantages, diversify customers and expand market exposure—while making employment commitments supporting a net benefit to Canada. 🇨🇦🤝🇺🇸
The presentation doesn’t reproduce every legal term or establish whether exceptions apply. But it clearly shows that Cliffs publicly acknowledged employment commitments as part of obtaining approval.
If the argument today is that changed trade conditions erase those commitments, show the provision that permits it.
Canadian steelworkers deserve an explanation that reconciles today’s position with what Cliffs told its own stakeholders. 👷

Want to see something fucking wild? Look at the troll-infested replies on yesterday’s posts. Now look at today’s. Thousands of views, just a tiny handful of trolls, probably even real people! The barrage of bullshit has dropped off a cliff. Something is FUCKING different! 😂
Dear Mr. Zelensky,
First, I admire you greatly.
Now, please destroy EVERY Russian energy site, and continue wiping out Russian bot/troll farms.
With gratitude,
-Jack
So, why would a steel company in 🇨🇦, owned by Trump's buddy, ship slabs to U.S. for finishing, turn away Canadian automotive orders for finished steel, refuse subsidies & grants from 🇨🇦 govt, & lay off 80% of Canadian workers during a U.S. trade war against Canada?
Hmm 🤔
Ukraine shredding Russian bot networks and saving Western democracy as a result would be an absolutely wild victory.
Which is yet another reason why we need to keep funding and supporting Ukraine by giving them the weaponry they need to win.
This is exactly why the rule of law matters.
@melaniejoly is right to insist that legally binding undertakings under the Investment Canada Act be honoured.
@CLE_CLF acquired Stelco knowing these commitments existed. Changing market conditions or business strategies don’t automatically extinguish legal obligations.
The irony is that U.S. tariff policy helped create the very market conditions now being cited.
Businesses invest in countries precisely because of the rule of law, regulatory certainty and the expectation that agreements will be enforced. Canada holding investors accountable isn’t a deterrent to investment. It’s what gives responsible investors confidence that the rules mean something.
If these undertakings have been breached, Canada has legal remedies available.
Canadian steelworkers shouldn’t be left holding the bag. Agreements must mean something, regardless of which side of the border an investor comes from. 🇨🇦🇺🇸
@bhpaterson Might I suggest you find a local university and volunteer as a potential test subject. You would easily qualify for at least 3 studies. Literally lighting up the DSM with this post.
@Raysmith202@4AnimalLife Oh fuck off. Stelco is withholding orders of Canadian rolled steel from Canadian car manufacturers. Shove your taking points up your arse
