Un día hace 10 años me fui de Madrid persiguiendo un sueño. Pase muchas noches sin dormir, mucho pan con queso y noodles de 50 céntimos, casas con calefacción de carbón, compartir el baño en las escaleras del piso, colchones en el suelo. Berlín me dio la experiencia completa. Busqué discos día y noche, hice música a diario, me comí horas y horas de fiesta estudiando sets de DJs en los mejores clubs del mundo hasta que logre tourear y obtener el reconocimiento, parte de mi sueño se cumplió.

Lo que pasó el día 1 de enero en @lasterclub es otra parte de el. Estar en la pista con toda mi familia y amigos escuchando música techno en pleno centro de Madrid por 12 horas con mis disc-jockeys favoritos a TODO volumen con los mejores supporters del mundo RAVING como que aquí no hay mañana. Con el corazón os doy las gracias a todos y al equipo de Laster en especial por dejarse la piel durante años. Hoy orgulloso por fin puedo decir MADRIZ ES TECHNO. 🚨🔥❤️‍🔥

“QFF/DGTC 23.” That cryptic New Year’s Day post was the surest sign of what was then to come. After nearly a decade, Skrillex seemed ready to follow through on his ‘Recess’ successor. Just two days later, “Rumble” kickstarted the campaign for his eventual title of our 2023 Artist of the Year.

Shortly after that single with Fred again.. and Flowdan, Skrillex shed some light on his absence. He’d come out the other side of 2022 ready to attack 2023 with a renewed purpose. The result: two albums, a headlining Coachella set, a sold-out evening at MSG, an open-to-close return to Red Rocks, and so much more.

It's impossible to separate the back-to-back albums and the excitement they’d already generated in the live space. And it all started back in January with his run of UK pop-up shows alongside Fred again.. and Four Tet. That week for Pangbourne House Mafia would eventually give way to a similar run in NYC in the week leading up to ‘Quest For Fire’ and ‘Don’t Get Too Close.’

Then, Coachella happened. After Frank Ocean’s withdrawal, Skrillex, Fred again.., and Four Tet stepped up to fill in on one of music’s biggest stages. It was nothing short of a historic night, marking a defining moment for this decade of dance music.

Even on the heels of a double album, Skrillex still put out a steady stream of music, including “Fine Day Anthem” with Boys Noize, “Pepper” with Flowdan and Lil Baby, and “Baby again..” with Fred again.. and Four Tet. And there's still two more albums potentially to come; in April, Skrillex added “SKRLX” and “CONTRA” to his original “QFF/DGTC” teaser.

Skrillex's return to dance music’s mountain top is one that many felt was only a matter of time. And while he’d already cemented his legacy a long time ago, 2023 emphatically extended a resume that many — including us — put on a shortlist of the greatest to ever do it, leading to his title of Dancing Astronaut’s 2023 Artist of the Year.
