Then I asked him why. His answer stayed with me: both his parents had lost their jobs. He didn’t want to drop out. He wanted a certificate and a way to make an honest living. This was how he was paying for it.

That conversation is why we pushed for NELFUND. The President had approved it, but no appropriation had been made — no money. I took the MD to Mr President, he took it to the Council, and the funds were released from our recoveries.

NELFUND has now reached about 1.6 million students.
