I was watching a podcast the other day where the South African host interviewing a Zimbabwean guest found out to his surprise that Zimbabweans also say "futsek/voetsek" as an angry exclamation, like South Africans do. The guest had to remind him him, "We had the same colonisers."

I found it desperately upsetting that these 2 cousins living literally right next door to each other, who both come from the same wider ethnic group have somehow become complete strangers to each other because a 19th century English paedophile called Cecil Rhodes drew an imaginary line in the sand one day and called everything to the north "Rhodesia" and everything to the South "South Africa".

And because of that, Thabo and Tanaka are now strangers to the point where they no longer know even the most basic things about each other anymore. It's like someone came to your house, stole all your shit, kidnapped some of your family members, and trafficked them into slavery, but that wasn't enough. He then built a wall dividing your house into different parts and placed you and your remaining siblings on different sides of the wall so that while you know that your siblings are alive and nearby, you're also never allowed to see or speak to them again.

And then over the decades as you remain confined in this arrangement and you have your own kids, these cousins grow up never having known their cousins on the other side of the wall. It's the sort of unspeakable cruelty that only a European could ever be capable of, and it says something very unflattering about Africans that rather than destroy this wall and expunge it from our consciousness, many of us rather choose to continue being socially engineered by long-dead 19th century European paedophiles, maintaining this completely weird, illogical and bizarre psychological distance from people who are LITERALLY OUR CLOSEST LIVING RELATIVES.

Imagine someone from Burundi being a "foreigner" in Kenya? Or someone from Zimbabwe being "kwerekwere" in what used to be his own ancestral land until a white guy stole it and named it "South Africa".
