For those who are unfamiliar with Thai culture, Poom is dressed as Ngo Pa (เงาะป่า), a character from classical Thai literature, not as a parody of Black people.
Ngo Pa has been part of Thai literature and traditional performing arts for well over a century. The character is typically portrayed with dark skin, tightly curled hair, and clothing associated with a forest-dwelling community. This visual depiction has long been used in stage performances, school plays, and cultural events to represent that specific literary character.
Because the makeup includes darkened skin, it's understandable that some international viewers may immediately associate it with blackface, especially given the painful history of blackface in many Western countries. However, the historical and cultural context here is different. The costume is intended to recreate a well-known Thai literary figure rather than mock, stereotype, or imitate people of African descent.
That said, cultural context doesn't always translate across countries, and it's okay for people to ask questions or express concerns. The most helpful approach is to understand both perspectives: the Thai cultural reference behind the costume and the historical sensitivities surrounding similar imagery elsewhere.
