#VPDNews: Thirteen blessing scams targeting elderly Chinese victims have resulted in victims losing more than $300,000 in cash, gold, and jewelry so far in 2026.

By this time last year, VPD had recorded six such incidents and about $200,000 in valuables stolen.

“The increase in incidents this year compared to last is deeply concerning to the VPD,” said Inspector Shiv Gill. “The criminals behind these scams use fear to manipulate very vulnerable people into handing over large sums of money. It’s cruel and it leaves victims and their families facing significant financial issues, not to mention the loss of cherished family heirlooms”

Investigators believe the suspects behind these crimes operate internationally and the Department is liaising with other police agencies on these files.

Criminals in these cases approach victims, engage them in conversation, and use deep-seated cultural fear and manipulation to make them believe a terrible misfortune or curse will befall them if they don’t have their valuables spiritually blessed.

Victims are typically escorted a few blocks away to meet another suspect who tells them to go home, gather up cash and jewelry and come back for the blessing.
The fearful victims do what they’re convinced they have to, and hand over their valuables. The criminals then use deception and sleight of hand to switch out the valuables for worthless items such as bags of cornstarch.

Victims often don’t realize they been scammed until the scammers are long gone.

Suspects in these cases are generally older Asian people.

More than half of these crimes in 2026 have occurred in east and southeast Vancouver. Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward.

The VPD previously shared video of a blessing scam in progress to help identify the suspects.

Investigators are now sharing additional video and images of suspects wanted in relation to a blessing scam that occurred on June 24, 2026, at approximately 1:45 p.m. The victim in this case was a 78-year-old woman who lost $23,282 and three pieces of jewelry to the scammers. The offence occurred in the 2500 block of E. 20th Avenue Vancouver.
The suspects are described as:

Suspect #1 – Asian female. Approximately 50 years of age, 160cm tall, with black hair and wearing a round sun hat, a grey jacket, white shirt, grey pants, a surgical mask and back support brace.

Suspect #2 – Asian male, approximately 60 years of age, 170 cm tall, wearing a grey baseball hat, dark coloured jacket, grey pants, carrying a black bag.

As VPD continue to investigate these cases, police are sharing the following tips to help keep the community safer:
1⃣One or more strangers may approach you, and will speak your language.
2⃣They may claim that your family will have misfortunes and say they can protect you.
3⃣They may ask you to hand over money, jewelry, or valuables so they can “Bless” them.
4⃣Do not give them anything. Trust your instincts, remember what they look like and walk away.
5⃣Tell a family member right away and call 911 to report the incident to the police immediately.

VPD officers will be at Chong Lee Market (3818 Rupert St) and T&T Supermarket (2206 Kingsway) this Sunday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. handing out flyers to the Chinese community to raise awareness. The public is encouraged to talk to them and share those flyers with their families and loved ones.

Quite the chutzpah for Turkey to open this kettle of fish.

If Turkey is now committed to "decolonization," does that mean they will give back the lands taken from the many ethnic and religious minorities who have been victims of Ottoman & Turkish imperialism?

Will the Armenians have their ancient lands restored to them, or receive reparations for the genocide inflicted on them in 1915?

The Kurds given the right of self-determination?

The ancient Greek regions returned?

Will the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of Northern Cyprus be reversed?

Will the descendants of Jewish families who fled Kemalist policies of forced assimilation be given compensation?

Will the Hagia Sophia be returned the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, from whom it was stolen?

Will there be a truth & reconciliation project recognizing the millions of slaves taken & trafficked by the Ottoman Empire, particularly the countless boys kidnapped from Balkan Christian families for forced military service?

Will compensation be given to Christians for the hundred of Churches and monasteries destroyed?

The possibilities for Turkish decolonization are endless.

#VPDNews: Visitors to the Granville Street Entertainment District (GED) pedestrian zone can expect to see more uniformed officers through the summer.

“During FIFA, the GED was a great draw for visitors to the city and a big boost to businesses. Now that the pedestrian zone initiative is being kept until Labour Day, our focus is on continuing to ensure it is a safe and inviting destination for everyone who wants to go there,” said Superintendent Phil Heard.

The VPD is working within the available funding provided by the city to deploy additional uniformed officers along the pedestrian zone daily, nightly and on weekends. These officers are additional to the regular daily police deployment downtown. Enhanced police deployments in the GED will also include more police vehicles and traffic mitigation measures.

“The Department has heard from residents and businesses in the area about how they want Granville Street to continue to look and feel vibrant through the summer, and the VPD shares their views,” Heard said.

For safety and security reasons, the VPD does not disclose specifics about officer deployments in advance or during policing operations.

After Labour Day, the VPD will provide a full costing breakdown and a summary of incidents in the GED to the media.

Every morning I write about someone Iran just executed, within minutes, a message arrives a mother, a sister, a friend, begging me to write about their loved one who is on the death row. Before it's too late.

This is why I want to write before the execution of this young woman, not after. Arghavan Fallahi. 24 years old. Evin Prison. Sentenced to death.

Judge Salavati one of Iran's most notorious hanging judges, sentenced her under "Baghi," armed rebellion.

During months in solitary confinement, she was subjected to severe psychological torture and pressure to make forced confessions. But she refused. So they sentenced her to death anyway.

Fellow female prisoners who were with Arghavan inside Evin say her situation is urgent. The torture has left her with severe psychological trauma and physical illness. She is not just facing the death sentence, she is suffering right now, inside that cell. But is still alive and is still time to save her life.

Please join me and help us Iranians to say her name now and demand international community and the leader leaders of the world to put pressure on these that republic to stop them from executing her and other political prisoners.

As someone who speaks French and supports the broad goal of official bilingualism, I think this kind of regulatory over reach is hugely counter productive.

It’s an effort to impose a false reality on the private sector in communities with small (in some cases tiny) francophone populations.

This sort of thing undermines public support for bilingualism in general.

It’s costly, pointless, and will create unintended consequences.

It imposes huge new costs on the private sector when our economy is struggling, and we should be focussing on a prosperity / productivity agenda.

When banks can’t find enough francophone staff in a place like Yarmouth, don’t be surprised if they close rather than pay massive fines to service a small community.

Trucking firms in Edmonton have a hard enough time finding English speaking drivers / staff. How are they supposed to hire French workers in a city where 1% of the population are francophones, all to provide french service where there is no demand?

The fines these and other businesses will be forced to pay will just increase prices and be passed onto consumers, when the government says it’s focussed on reducing the cost of living.

It’s stupid policies like this that make many Canadians feel like Ottawa is out of touch with reality.
