The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced that the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline is now 100% complete and ready for first gas, while the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline has reached 95% completion.

The completion of the OB3 River Niger Crossing, which involved drilling about two kilometres beneath the river, has unlocked the full capacity of the 130-kilometre pipeline, designed to transport up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day. The project is also expected to unlock over 500 million standard cubic feet per day of additional gas supply to the domestic market.

The AKK pipeline is equally at an advanced stage, with NNPC targeting early gas delivery to Abuja in 2026. Together, the projects will strengthen Nigeria’s gas transportation network, improve energy supply reliability and support electricity generation, manufacturing and industrial growth.

The progress on both projects represents a major boost to Nigeria’s gas infrastructure and supports the Federal Government’s ambition to raise gas production to 12 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030, while strengthening the foundation for broader economic development.

Nigerian troops have recovered the bodies of five additional Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, along with AK-47 rifles and other items, during ongoing exploitation operations following the terrorists failed attacks on Nigerian troops in Kukawa LGA, Borno State, on 29 August 2026.

The decomposed remains are believed to be those of fighters who sustained fatal injuries during Nigerian military airstrikes conducted during the engagement. The terrorists abandoned their dead and wounded comrades as they fled the battlefield.

The recovery provides further indication of the casualties inflicted on the terrorist group during the failed assault.

ATIKU AND THE BORDERS: NIGERIANS DESERVE FACTS, NOT CAMPAIGN SLOGANS

The Presidency has noted the recent declaration by former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, that he would “open the borders” immediately upon assuming office.

The facts are straightforward: Nigeria's land borders are already open.

The Federal Government announced the reopening of most of the country's land borders on 14 March 2024, and it has not reversed that position.

It is therefore difficult to understand which borders the former Vice President intends to “open” when the borders are already open. On February 14, 2026, President Tinubu opened the Kamba borders in Kebbi State, with attendant economic and diplomatic gains.

If he means he would relax existing border controls, then Nigerians deserve to know precisely which controls he intends to remove, why he considers their removal necessary, and what safeguards his administration would deploy against terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking, and other forms of transnational organised crime.

This distinction is fundamental.

But of course, Atiku is unhinged now, and he would say or announce anything to attract and deceive the politically gullible.

An open border is not an uncontrolled border. Modern border management is designed to facilitate legitimate movement, trade and economic interaction while preventing criminals and terrorist organisations from exploiting the same channels. Effective border governance therefore requires a combination of immigration control, customs administration, intelligence-sharing, surveillance, technology and coordinated security operations.

This is particularly important for Nigeria because our northern security environment cannot be divorced from developments across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin.

As Atiku rightly acknowledged, Nigeria shares borders with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. While the region continues to confront terrorism, violent extremism and transnational organised crime have proven to be domestic disturbances that have found border porosity as a channel for their export to other countries.

The security reality is compelling. The Global Terrorism Index 2026 indicates that approximately 41 per cent of terrorist attacks occur within 50 kilometres of an international border, while about 64 per cent occur within 100 kilometres. Borderlands are particularly vulnerable where difficult terrain, limited state presence and weak coordination create opportunities for terrorist organisations to operate.

The implications for Nigeria are obvious. As domestic insurgencies evolve into increasingly networked and transnational terrorist threats, effective border management becomes an indispensable component of national security. Terrorists and criminal networks exploit sovereign boundaries precisely because security forces cannot simply pursue them across international borders without appropriate cooperation and legal frameworks.

Consequently, Nigeria's focus on the Northeast and Northwest corridors, including the coordinated deployment of the Armed Forces and other security institutions, should not be misconstrued as evidence of closed borders. It reflects responsible border security.

The former Vice President, as an experienced politician who has previously occupied the second-highest office in the country, should know this distinction.

While political contestation is legitimate in a democracy, statements about national security and the Nigerian economy should be grounded in facts, institutional understanding, and a credible alternative policy agenda.

It does not need to defeat America militarily.
It only needs to watch Washington exhaust its resources, weaken its alliances, and undermine its credibility.

The central lesson is blunt: military strength can destroy an enemy's infrastructure; it cannot manufacture political obedience or rebuild lost trust.

The Iran war was meant to showcase American dominance.
Instead, it exposed how recklessly that power can be squandered.
America didn’t lose its superpower status overnight,it squandered it.

PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES COMPREHENSIVE FORENSIC AUDIT OF IPPIS, FEDERAL AGENCIES, MINISTRIES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, to oversee and coordinate a comprehensive forensic audit of Federal Government systems.

The audit will include a review of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), Federal Government agencies, and their administration and internal controls.

President Tinubu’s directive follows the Federal Executive Council's resolution on August 19, 2026, in response to findings by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on “fake agencies”, ghost workers, and other control failures.

The exercise will establish the nature and extent of weaknesses in Government’s control system, and determine how such weaknesses have been exploited.

The review will comprise two interconnected components.

The first will focus on a forensic audit of Government systems, particularly IPPIS and related payroll, personnel, pension and financial-management platforms. It will examine reported cases of ghost workers and payroll fraud, reconcile the figures identified by the ICPC, trace how fictitious or ineligible persons were enrolled, and review access, identity, biometric and bank-account controls.

The exercise will also examine the interfaces between IPPIS and other government platforms, including GIFMIS, Remita, the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and Sub-TSA, to determine whether fraud resulted from system defects, process failures, inadequate segregation of duties or deliberate circumvention.

The second component of the audit will cover all Federal Government agencies, departments, commissions, councils, parastatals and other government bodies. It will establish a definitive inventory of such bodies and verify their legal basis, while examining how entities obtain official recognition, budgetary consideration, correspondence privileges, office facilities and access to government systems.

The exercise will assess governance, procurement, internal-audit, and oversight controls across Government to close systemic weaknesses that could allow irregular entities or persons to access public resources.

President Tinubu directed that the exercise be conducted with the highest standards of independence, professionalism and forensic integrity.

The audit team will have access to relevant government systems and records. It will collaborate with the ICPC to ensure that the review complements all ongoing investigations, prosecutions and recoveries.

President Tinubu expects the exercise to go beyond identifying individual cases of fraud or administrative failure by strengthening the architecture of Government, closing systemic loopholes, improving data verification and reconciliation, reinforcing accountability, and ensuring that only duly constituted entities and eligible personnel have access to Government resources.

The exercise underscores the President’s commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability, fiscal governance and institutional integrity across the Federal Government.

President Tinubu orders forensic audit of IPPIS and federal agencies after ICPC ghost-worker findings

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a wide forensic audit of Federal Government payroll and agency controls, after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) reported fake agencies, ghost workers and other control failures.

The President directed Finance Minister and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele to run the exercise. The order follows a Federal Executive Council decision on 19 August 2026.

The audit has two parts.
The first is a forensic review of government systems, especially the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and related payroll, personnel, pension and financial platforms.

President Tinubu's economic reform earns another positive rating from Moody's

Moody’s Ratings revised Nigeria’s credit outlook to positive, citing stronger-than-expected economic growth, Bloomberg has reported.

The improvements reflect stronger external buffers and greater macroeconomic stability, while rising oil production is expected to boost growth in 2026 and 2027, according to a statement Friday. The credit grader also affirmed the nation’s rating at B3, six levels below investment grade.

The economic growth, “if sustained, would enhance the country’s capacity to absorb external shocks, strengthen economic resilience and, over time, support a gradual increase in government revenue,” analysts Jorge Valez and Matt Robinson wrote.

The outlook revision brings Africa’s largest oil producer and refiner closer to a credit-rating upgrade and emphasises President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fiscal consolidation and reforms.

“CHEAPER FUEL MUST MEAN CHEAPER TRANSPORT FARES”: PRESIDENT TINUBU, GOVERNORS MOVE TO CUT TRANSPORT FARES NATIONWIDE

I am pleased with my discussion with the Governors’ Forum this afternoon. The Governors have, on their own initiative, resolved to take immediate measures to bring down the cost of transportation in their states, with a strong focus on leveraging the cost benefits of CNG and electric vehicles.

The Federal Government is already investing significantly in this energy transition. Through the Presidential CNG Initiative, over 120,000 vehicles have been converted nationwide, with more than 100,000 additional conversion kits in the works. At the same time, we continue to expand conversion centres and refuelling infrastructure nationwide.

The Federal Government, through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, is currently financing more than 100 gas projects across the country, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations. In May, I commissioned four of these projects in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri, including a 15-station refuelling network in Lagos and an Abuja facility that can serve 1,000 cars and tricycles and 50 trucks and buses a day.

I have also directed the additional rollout of another 500 CNG refuelling stations nationwide in addition to the 500 stations ordered earlier in the year by the Fund, bringing the programme to 1,000 stations across the country.

Intra-state transport is where Nigerians feel the cost most directly, and it is where the states hold the levers. I am encouraged that our Governors are moving to bring these benefits closer to the people they serve.

We have agreed to set up a joint Federal and State committee to begin implementing these measures immediately. A vehicle running on CNG spends 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel than one running on petrol.

From October 1, our goal is that Nigerians begin to partake in those savings through lower transport fares.
We have agreed that cheaper fuel should result in cheaper fares!

Each tier of government must keep doing its part and work together for the benefit of every Nigerian.
