Haewon talking about the diverse opinion about NMIXX’s music in their recent documentary:
“The fact that people have mixed opinions is itself the identity of our music. Our songs keep creating room for debate, isn’t that great? I want to make music that gets people talking, and it seems like we're doing that, I think that's such a natural and great thing.”

“The Vision”
🧢: Ah, vision. Right… My vision with NewJeans is just… to live happily. That’s it. Honestly, with all my heart, “let’s live happily.” You know, these girls… they were young and full of untapped energy, not knowing exactly how to channel it. They wanted to become celebrities, but they didn’t even really understand what being an artist meant. They just auditioned and joined because it was a big company and the people there seemed capable. That’s really all it was.
They didn’t even know how this system worked.
Even reporters, honestly, don’t really understand how the entertainment system works. And it differs from company to company. Even within HYBE, each label operates differently… So how would these kids know any of that when they joined?
What matters most is: how are you going to teach them? How are you going to guide them? What kind of people are you going to help them become? That, to me, is incredibly important.
I always tell the members this too… I said from the beginning, during this contract period, “You’re studying with me.” I’m your teacher, and I’ve brought in a lot of excellent instructors. So I match them up with different teachers as needed and give them special lessons. That’s what I’m doing. Over the course of seven years, I want them to study things that will help them make a living after this.
You can’t be with me forever, right? You can’t be under someone else forever. As you grow, of course you’ll want to do your own thing. And when that time comes, I want you to be able to choose freely.
It’s like being a good parent… it’s not about doing everything for your kid right now. It’s about raising them so they can stand on their own later. You have to teach them how to hunt, how to survive. If you just keep spoon-feeding them, what happens when you’re not there anymore?
That’s why parents take guidelines and principles so seriously when it comes to raising their kids.
I think the same way. If these girls are going to become incredible artists… or maybe after seven years they’re sick of everything and want to get married. (laughs) Or maybe they want to study abroad. Who’s going to stop them?
If they gave it their all while they were young, then after that, I want them to live the life they want. That’s what I believe is truly in their best interest in the long run.
Clinging to them for the company’s benefit, forcing renewals… I think that kind of practice is problematic. Who knows what kind of new teams or changing markets are coming next?
In that sense, my vision is probably something the K-pop scene hasn’t really seen before. That might be why the members found it interesting and fun… like, “Oh! I love it!” Their parents, too.
Honestly, I just dislike how the K-pop scene has become so formulaic. Once something succeeds, everyone follows that exact style. That’s no fun. Just because our style is popular now doesn’t mean another style can’t also be. It should constantly shift, back and forth, changing. That’s how we all manage to survive.
If our style becomes the standard and dominates everything, it gets harder for even us to survive.
Once we’re in a stable enough place, we should be able to make room for others too. Let them thrive. Let there be freedom. Let people look at them and go, “Wow, they’re doing even better than us.” That’s when it gets fun.
In that sense, I thought… if we can make good money while doing things this way, we could become a great business role model. Like, “Look at them, they don’t even do YouTube promotion. They don’t seem to care about all that. They just do their thing. And yet? They’re making money and doing well. How are they making so much money?”
