'One Battle After Another' production designer Florencia Martin discusses building Paul Thomas Anderson’s detailed world:
"Everything in that set was practical—the ceiling fans worked, the fridge worked—so during rehearsal, Sensei just went and opened the fridge, grabbed two Modelos, passed one to Bob, and cracked it open. Then that became a beautiful part of the storyline."

Thrilled to make my @ScreenDrafts debut ranking the films of Paul Thomas Anderson — 9 masterpieces and 1 very good film. We talked for five hours and still feel like I barely scratched the surface. Listen here. 🎧 https://t.co/RN2Rwy89Hc
@onebattlemovie Viewing #3 in IMAX 70mm at Citywalk was the best one yet. VistaVision looked incredible but top-to-bottom screen-filling IMAX 70mm is like you're on the ride. Your stomach actually drops during the chase sequence.
A move completely antithetical to the ethos of the Alamo and to those who love the theatrical experience they provide. This is a profound and upsetting mistake @alamodrafthouse
I think the first time we've ever shared a number one, and most certainly the first time we've ever shared a top two. Time to pack it in, @davidehrlich.
“As much as The Master wasn’t really about Scientology, similarly, One Battle After Another isn’t really about the Weather Underground. But Anderson’s research gives the film a grounding in real-life details that allow the story to unfold in different directions. In interviews, Anderson keeps circling back again and again to the people, not the politics. At the end of the day, the film is less concerned with revolution and more with the tragedy of two characters who believe they have a higher calling, and one who drops everything to be there for his daughter.”

Paul Thomas Anderson: “Writers, we’re magpies, we steal all the bits and pieces that everybody says, as best we can. Shayna McHale’s a great writer. She played JP in this movie. I stole a line from her, ‘This pussy don’t pop for you,’ I owe her for that one. I stole a lot of words from Thomas Pynchon, who wrote a great book that we adapted. Stole some words from Nina Simone. Somebody asked her what freedom was, she said, ‘No fear.’ Pretty good line. So I share this with everybody I magpie’d off of."

'One Battle After Another' is dedicated to producer and first assistant director Adam Somner, who passed away in late 2024 during post-production. Somner worked with Anderson on his previous six features and Anderson has also credited Somner as the primary reason that 'One Battle After Another' exists at all.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s mother, actress Edwina Anderson, passed away in 2024, and receives her own 'One Battle After Another' tribute, in the form of a dedication at the end of the film. Additionally, Anderson’s father, TV personality Ernie Anderson, gets his own nod in all of Anderson’s features, thanks to the Ghoulardi production credit.

One of One Battle After Another's most memorable lines—which takes place when Sensei tries to urge Bob to jump from a moving car—was not in the original shooting script, though PTA said the line was on his mind while making the film.
He’s credited the singer Nina Simone, who once said: “I’ll tell you what freedom is to me. No fear.”
