Whose money is it, really?

Resort owners are now mobilizing resort workers against the government.

Think about that. They're using the workers as a shield — against a law written to protect those very workers.

Here's the truth:

In every country on earth, businesses operate under that country's financial laws. That's not oppression. That's normal.

The Maldives exports almost nothing but fish. This country survives by exporting one thing: tourism. And we import everything else. Every single thing we consume is paid by dollars.

So the law is simple and obvious: the foreign currency this country earns must be banked in this country.

And what do the resort owners say to that?

"It's my money. I'll keep it wherever I want."

But is it?

They built those businesses on our islands leased from the state, owned by the people. Public assets. Our inheritance.

When you let someone earn on the nation's assets and take the money out, you've built a country that stays poor while its beaches make billionaires. That's the whole story of our economy in one sentence.

The single biggest reason the Maldivian economy is weak: money made from this country's assets never stays in this country.

A government's job is not to protect a businessman's margin. A government's job is to protect the people's interest. The people's prosperity.

Fix this, and the economy gets stronger. A stronger economy means better wages, better lives, real security for every Maldivian family.

Don't fix it, and there is no salvation for this country.

And to every resort worker being told to oppose it: this law costs you nothing. Not one rufiyaa. Not one job.

Ask yourself who's actually asking you to fight and what they're fighting for.
